2 live sets from one of the original Uglyfunk Parties back in 1999, from Scott Robinson and Je:5 - Definitely groundbreaking and inspirational, hearing these at the time pushed me forward towards my own music making and live performances which were still a few years away from this time. Just got this from one of my old favourite US techno producers, D-Knox aka Donnell Knox, a DJ mix featuring a track from my doomsday clock album- Check it!

As you may have noticed, there was no Signals From Southwark this weekend. We’re taking 3 weeks off as I’m on my honeymoon right now on the other side of the planet - however I will be posting a few music links up for your enjoyment until we get back - Signals will return on 16th February..

This week we’re going a bit harder than usual - a mix inspired by the kind of stuff I was playing in the mid to late 90s at outdoor parties, so it’s a bit of a nostalgia trip… There area few newer pieces in there also, such as the Electric Kettle track, and I’m also warming you up for Scott Robinson’s forthcoming live showcase, in preparation for our gig at the WMF in Berlin on 26th of February, with two trax from his Debut release on Cluster which really hailed the arrival of the third wave of UK techno..

Subhead was a big big influence on my early work - Ctrl Alt Delete definitely has a bit of Subheads 11 and 18 in there. I first discovered them in 1996, and straight away they sounded original and unique, like the real embodiment the much touted techno ethic of sounding like “nothing you ever heard before” whilst enduring a real punk rock aesthetic. They were the first producers that I ever met who’s attitude, instead of holding back all but what they considered the very best of their material, was “put it all out - even if you don’t like it, someone else will!” - Not that you could really tell that by listening to their stuff. Often the reason why you might at first think a track is a dud was because you just didn’t get it!

On their sound all I’m going to say here, is “Very broad”: I have a mix of 37 trax here to show you how broad that sound really is, so the written word is no competition to that..

Personally, Subhead came crashing into my life round about 2002/2003 through mutual gigs in London, and then later, further afield in Germany - Phil & Jason were always the life and soul of any party, whether it be larging it in a freezing cold disused factory in the Elbe valley near Dresden, Gatecrashing the Tresor closing party (There were now 10 members of Subhead apparently, or so the doormen were informed as we gained free entry - and Subhead wasn’t even booked to play - Jase soon planned a Sub(head)terranian assault on the Tresor bunker - “I’m gonna steam the decks!”), Friedrichshain bar crawls with Jason after missing his flight back to the UK, to chilling at the pub in Vicky park with Phil.

Their numbers also included as resident studio monkey a certain Jamie Lidell who collaborated on the early releases. Side projects were also hatched including 2CB, Fix, X-Tras, Dot Com, and Jason’s House of Fix project which produced one of Tresor’s quirkiest releases ever.

Jason is still producing and performing around the world.
Phil sadly passed away in December 2007 - This mix is for you mate, I never did get to say goodbye to you properly - hope we’ll meet up on the other side..

2 live recordings for a new year - one recorded in the studio, and one recorded Live @ Rote Fabrik in Zurich 11.12.09 - The quality was pretty bad on the Zurich recording, I cleaned it up as best I could but there is still a lot of noise there - These sets are pretty raw, as I’m still becoming accustomed to the Hardware/Ableton configuration - I do like the roughness of some of the live jamming, just some of the transitions seem a little too rough, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing - I’ll leave that to you to decide..

Spain In The Arse - MH Edit by Mark Hawkins

My first lesson in Soundforge Circa 2000 - Field recording originally made at “The End Of The World Party”, Costa Brava, Spain.

A subverted DJ mix from one of the Babble DJs on the Smokescreen/BWPT soundsystem - This unfortunate DJ had been picked out for ridicule by the boys, poor sod, as JE:5’s Live rig was plugged into channel 3.

A pair of headphones were plugged into the live set mixer and the realisation had dawned that the level on channel 3 could be sneaked up while the dj’s back was turned and DJ WOT became master of ceremonies. poking fun at the cheese of the house music an anyone else unfortunate to fall onto the dancefloor during his watch.

The following autumn I used the recording to experiment with Soundforge at Stayfree in Leicester and basically taught myself how to manipulate audio. And this was long before I ever heard the Noodles stuff or Cassetteboy!

Saskia Slegers AKA Miss Djax gave me my first real big break into the music biz, and her Techno Label ‘Djax Up Beats” based in Eindhoven, Holland, has definitely been a big influence on the music I make myself over the years - So here’s 30 trax from various Djax Up records that I own that definitely showcase the very different sounds the Label has showcased over the years. And, in case you didn’t know, and particuarly for people from English speaking countries, the Dutch pronunciation of the letter “J” is like the English “Y” - So Djax is pronounced as the English speaker would pronounce “Jacks”- so it’s not “Dee Jacks” as many people here would assume. Anyway, hope you enjoy the mix.
